Biographical Profiles

John M. Kessler

John M. Kessler, Pharm.D., B.C.P.S. is Founder and Chief Clinical Officer of SecondStory Health, L.L.C. He is Board Certified in Pharmacotherapy (BCPS) and maintained an active pharmacotherapy practice in an adult internal medicine clinic. He has more than 20 years experience in medication systems design, adverse drug event reporting and errors analysis, and JCAHO accreditation standards. He has chaired the United States Pharmacopoeia's Advisory Panel on Medication Errors and he has served as an ex-officio Member on the National Coordinating Council for Medication Error Reporting and Prevention. He has consulted with healthcare organizations and regulatory authorities in the United States, South Africa, Brazil and the Middle East on medication safety.

He has experience in designing and implementing medication safety surveillance systems in large academic hospitals, small community hospitals and clinic environments. These surveillance systems have included:

  • "triggers-based" concurrent monitoring system in a large academic hospital
  • national drug information network to collect reports of adverse drug reactions
  • voluntary reporting methods in hospitals and clinics
  • observational methods and target-drug surveillance methods in hospitals
  • computerized screening to identify adverse events in hospital diagnosis databases


Richard C. Low

Richard Low is Chief Technology Officer of SecondStory Health. He is also the President of Topsail Technologies, Inc. which he founded in 2000 to focus on healthcare software development. Mr. Low has developed software systems to improve patient safety and to support community based health care and disease management. Prior to forming Topsail Technologies, Mr. Low was with Duke University Medical Center Information Systems for 11 years where he managed the Clinical Development Group which built among other systems, a clinical data repository results browser and an electronic clinical report transcription system. Mr. Low has over 20 years experience in software design and development.


Jan Schroeder

Mr. Jan Schroeder is the Senior Developer for SecondStory Health.  He earned a Masters degree in Mathematics and Computer Sciences from the University of Greifswald.  His interests include managing the full life cycle of system development, including requirements analysis, developing use cases, design, development, testing, deployment and user support.  Since 1993, his design experience includes:

  • simulation models for natural behaviors,
  • e-business, administrative and financial systems for universities,
  • management/compliance tracking systems for faculties,
  • adverse event reporting and communication systems for healthcare

His technical experience includes:

  • Programming Languages: Java, Smalltalk, Unix shell scripts, Perl, JavaScript
  • Database Systems: Oracle, Sybase, SQLServer

Carol J. Thomson

Carol J. Thomson is the Senior multimedia designer for SecondStory Health and is also the Founder of Firestream Multimedia, LLC.  She earned a B.S. in Computer Science from Randolph-Macon College and a certificate in documentary studies from Duke University.  She has 6 years experience as a multimedia designer and developer including website, CD-ROM, DVD, and video production in addition to her 14 years experience as an analyst/programmer with extensive experience in user interface design of software applications, Java and Smalltalk object oriented software development, and database application development.
